The problem is that extreme summer heat turns Chennai's low-income homes into "ovens," as roofs trap heat and cooling appliances are too expensive. To provide a solution, IAS officer Supriya Sahu launched the "Cool Roof" initiative, coating rooftops with solar-reflective white paint. The benefit to people is life-changing: indoor temperatures dropped by 5–8°C, making homes livable for the elderly and vulnerable without expensive technology or high electricity bills.
