A major new industry is set to come to one of Maharashtra's least-developed belts. Shyam Metalics has signed a ₹50,000 crore pact with the state to build a 9-million-tonne steel complex at Chandrapur in Vidarbha, expected to create about 30,000 jobs, 10,000 of them direct. More steel made at home means more local work, stronger nearby businesses and less reliance on imports. For now it is a non-binding MoU, subject to approvals and clearances, so the on-ground benefits will take time.
