Degraded Himalayan slopes faced severe soil erosion, frequent forest fires, and a loss of native biodiversity, leaving local communities without fodder, water security, or stable livelihoods. A 30-year project at Surya-Kunj empowered villagers to plant and protect native species, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that now hosts 88 naturally multiplying tree types. Locals gained consistent fodder, medicinal plants, and cooler air, while 160+ bird species returned to the restored hills.
