Extending CPAP by Two Weeks Boosts Lung Health in Preterm Babies
Preterm infants often face lifelong respiratory issues, such as asthma and wheezing, because their lungs do not fully develop. To address this, OHSU researchers found that extending CPAP breathing support by just two weeks beyond the usual clinical practice significantly boosts lung growth. This simple, non-pharmacologic intervention helps the lungs diffuse oxygen better and reduces wheezing through age one. By using this accessible tool longer, doctors can improve a child’s long-term respiratory health and protect against future lung complications.
